JOB SKILLS TRAINING

Ask Haitian people what Haitians need most and they will most likely answer “jobs.” The unemployment rate is said to be 40.6% and more than two-thirds of the labor force do not have formal jobs.

PLH seeks to provide training that will equip and empower individuals to find work and provide for their families.

INSTITUTE

PLH strives to create learning opportunities that are engaging and practical. English is a valuable skill in Haiti, providing job opportunities in hospitality, interpretation, administration, and education. The instructors at the PLH Institute use a mix of PLH-created curriculum and their own lesson plans.

ENGLISH

The PLH Institute offers three years of English courses as well as specialized advanced courses in translation, medical English, language teaching, and Bible survey. This year, we added courses in writing and computer applications.

COMPUTER CLASS

Most Haitians have limited experience with and access to computers; however, for Haiti to move forward, offices and businesses must begin utilizing modern technology. This course teaches the basics of computer applications including Microsoft windows, typing, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

PERSONAL FINANCE

In the course, PLH staff and community members as well as individuals from other organizations learn to identify their values and apply these to their finances, how to make and keep a zero-based budget, the importance of an emergency fund, and more. This course is taught by a champion in Oregon and conducted over zoom.

CONSTRUCTION

With years of construction projects planned for the PLH campus, we have sought to train up locals to be able to carry out as much of the work as possible alongside skilled and experienced volunteers.

Concrete

PLH sponsored four men to attend a concrete blocks and forms course in Haiti. These men were later hired to work on the pouring of the slabs for the shop, garage, and basketball courts. They continue to gain experience and knowledge.

ELECTRICAL

In the spring of 2022, PLH sent one young man to a two-week, Level 1 Electrical workshop. He was an outstanding student who received the "Top of Class" award!  He said the workshop was very good. He learned a lot and they were able to do lots of hands-on practice. He and another student are now studying on PLH scholarship in a 2-year electricity program.

AUTO MECHANICS

PLH has two young men studying auto mechanics in Port-au-Prince. They are now in the second year of the three-year program. PLH is looking forward to having our own well-trained mechanics to work on the PLH vehicles and work in a PLH auto mechanic shop one day.
