It was another cold, dark Thursday morning when I woke at 5:45am for our weekly Haitian staff meeting. We start at 6am, and I sometimes ask myself why don’t I push our meeting time back, but since Haiti is three hours ahead of Oregon, I know the time is good for the staff. Our meetings start with a prayer. Then, I give the team a short summary of what to expect in the near future. After that, each of the department leaders comes up to give a summary of the week.

This morning when I asked them to begin their department reports, I saw that Obenson, the head of PLH security, was the first to stand and come up to speak. Read more.

Our area of Saint Marc has received nearly 8,500 displaced individuals. Half of these came from other areas of the Artibonite province and the other half came from the Port-au-Prince and Cabaret areas. The report states that 98% of these individuals are fleeing violence. In all, 578,000 individuals are internally displaced in Haiti. We are feeling the effects of this crisis with the large growth in our programs. Families relocating to Camp Marie and the surrounding areas are learning of PLH and enrolling their children in our programs. Read more.

The PLH basketball program has attracted many new youth including over 70 girls! We are excited to have so many young ladies participating in the program. Coach Jocelyn is heading up basketball and organizes friendly scrimmages and games for the kids to test their skills. Read more.

PLH provides select scholarships to individuals from the community to learn skilled trades. To date, we have sent four men to masonry training, two to welding training, and we currently have three studying auto mechanics in Port-au-Prince. Through these training opportunities, young men are learning a skill which allows them to provide for their families and build their future. PLH has also been able to hire each of them to work on campus construction projects. Read more…

This summer for the first time, PLH hosted two months of classes for kids from the community. During vacation, children and youth in Haiti don't have a lot of activities or events to keep them busy. This July and August, kids came to PLH to learn English and artisan crafts. The kids enjoyed having somewhere to go each day and enjoyed learning new skills. Read more…
